Ruth Smiler, owner of Manners for Life, offers private in-home dog training throughout the New Bedford area, group classes at The Executive Dog, and dog bite safety and prevention training. She is actively involved with many organizations dealing with animal welfare issues. She has been a volunteer trainer of shelter dogs and has taught basic obedience and manners classes at the Faxon Animal Rescue League in Fall River. In cooperation with other private rescue groups and individuals, she places needy dogs in loving homes. She is also active in the Massachusetts Animal Coalition and the Coalition for Animals of Greater New Bedford. Until the retirement of her dogs, Daisy and Mick, Ruth was a therapy dog volunteer for senior programs. A regular guest on Jack Peterson’s popular Friday Pet Show for Animal Lovers on WBSM radio Fairhaven, she answers listeners’ questions about animal care, behavior, and training. Her pet advice column appears in each issue of the New Bedford Weekly Compass.
